Martha Schofield

 Martha Schofield (Chapter 11)

Martha Schofield was a real historical figure. She was a Pennsylvania Quaker who moved to Aiken, South Carolina, after the Civil War to establish schools for freed slaves. She founded what became Schofield Industrial School and later Schofield Normal and Industrial School (now Memorial Hospital in Aiken). She taught and worked in South Carolina from 1865 until her death in 1916.

She did face threats and intimidation from the KKK and other white supremacist groups during Reconstruction. Her letters to family members documented these experiences, including threats from hooded riders. The letter writing and teaching activities I included in the callout are historically accurate representations of her experiences.
